The United States Supreme Court

The federal court system in the United States includes more than one hundred courts and eight hundred active judges. The system resembles a pyramid - cases begin at the broad base with a local district court judge. They might be appealed to a regional circuit court of appeals. And at the very top, with the final word on Constitutional issues in the United States, sits the United States Supreme Court.

Current United States Supreme Court Justices

Nine judges, known as "justices," serve on the United States Supreme Court. They are nominated by the president and confirmed by Congress. Use the links below to view biography pages about each justice that include information on their educational backgrounds, legal careers, and impact on the court.
